The Director of Software Development role is accountable for the overall delivery of B2B ecommerce platform transformation efforts. As a member of the leadership team, the role contributes to the development and execution of the overall transformation strategy and ensures its alignment with the business strategy and the delivery of capabilities. We are looking for an influential engineering leader to provide strategic direction on initiatives with significant bottom line impact.

The Director of Software Development will work as a key leader of an exceptionally talented team, to deliver cutting edge innovation at a massive scale. We are looking for an independent thinker who makes convincing, evidence-based decisions. You will be an evangelist for repeatable processes and automation to safeguard our customer experience as well as increase efficiency of our applications and team. You will own and drive the engineering development roadmap for your teams and provide leadership that creates an environment of innovation, ownership, delivering with quality, as well as fostering a culture of inclusion and knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, guide, and grow an amazing team of engineers that design, build, implement, and manage scalable, reliable & resilient B2B ecommerce platform utilizing MACH architectural frameworks e.g., commerce tools
  • Provide technical leadership to a dynamic team throughout the software development life cycle - both oversight and hands on contributions to the software design and code reviews
  • Run an efficient outcome-based team process to execute on enterprise objectives in a timely and predictable manner
  • Hire, retain, inspire, and lead multiple high-performing engineering teams; Coach individual contributors into more senior roles including design and code reviews and 1 on 1s
  • Develop and execute development roadmaps with input from the product, customer success, sales, security & IT that maximizes opportunities to improve business processes, develop a best-in-class product and produce results
  • Design and build security and privacy-enhancing techniques into our solutions to avert disruption and maintain uptime
  • Lead and champion best practices and uphold a culture that is committed to quality, test driven development and repeatable processes through automation and infrastructure as code
  • Review and evaluate emerging technologies and influence our technology stack, strategic approach, and engineering roadmap
  • Work with QA teams to ensure applications are properly tested prior to being released
  • Effectively communicate complicated system architecture concepts and business value in a way your target audience will understand
  • Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of team solutions
  • Encourage innovation, implementation of cutting-edge technologies, inclusion, outside-of-the-box thinking, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity

Qualifications

  • Candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years’ experience in software engineering with API-first microservices based architecture leveraging popular ecommerce frameworks (e.g., commercetools) building and operating large-scale, distributed, highly available B2B SaaS-based applications in a distributed team-based setting
  • 4+ years’ experience as a people manager in a software development organization
  • Hands-on experience with databricks cloud data warehouse/data lakes
  • Extensive experience with ecommerce platforms, omnichannel commerce delivery, and retail processes, systems, and functions building multi-region, multi-language, feature toggled, B2B ecommerce platform
  • Deep understanding of current cloud offerings (AWS preferred) and the ability to design an effective architecture utilizing serverless computing patterns (AWS lambda preferred)
  • Understanding of database options, how they fit into a full commerce solution, and how to determine the best fit based on the business requirements
  • Experience with modern web application design and analysis and design patterns
  • Expert level software development experience writing large, distributed applications/services in multiple web technologies including React, React Hooks, Recharts, GraphQL, SQL, Python, Sparksql, Apollo, Prisma, JavaScript, Node.js, Enzyme, React Testing Library, Cypress, CSS, Styled Components
  • Experience managing offshore teams as well as SI partners
  • Hands-on experience leading a software development organization and leading a team in the development and rapid delivery of next-generation digital products, utilizing robust, scalable CI/CD pipelines & automation frameworks
  • Develop and roll-out best in class engineering practices for agile delivery. Knowledge of Kanban and Scrum Agile Methodologies for software development
  • Demonstrated leadership with development teams that provided expert level knowledge of software development methodology, practice, and architecture across the full project life cycle
  • Balance the needs of the various business units, and blend them to create a seamless, state-of-the-art B2B digital experience
  • Expert analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills with complex distributed microservices based architectures
  • Ability to think strategically and design accordingly in a future-forward landscape
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills demonstrating the ability to present various topics along with writing proposals and guidance documents for both the developer audience and technical leadership
  • Demonstrated proactive skills, mindset and approach that always puts the customer’s experience first
  • Experience recruiting and building diverse engineering teams, leading by example, promoting a positive & inclusive culture, and fostering trust & transparency
  • Exceptional customer relationship skills including the ability to discover the true requirements underlying feature requests, recommend alternative technical and business approaches, and lead engineering efforts to meet aggressive timelines with optimal solutions
  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced, unstructured environment
